Nearly 100 people attended the 3 vigil ceremonies organized by the Prescott-Russell Coalition to eliminate violence against women on Friday, December 6, 2024, in the municipalities of Casselman, Hawkesbury, and Rockland. Since 2011, these ceremonies have been a symbolic moment of commemoration in memory of women and children who have died as a result of gender-based violence. They also serve as a call to action, reminding the Prescott-Russell community that violence against women remains a scourge that demands our attention and collective action.

\r\nOn this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we pay tribute to the 14 women tragically killed 35 years ago during the 1989 Montreal Massacre at École Polytechnique. On this December 6th, while commemorating these 14 women from Montreal, we also think of all those who have lost their lives this year in Ontario, those still in danger, and all those fighting for survival. Since November 2023, Ontario has already recorded 59 femicides. These murders are preventable tragedies, leaving behind devastated families and shaken communities. As we commemorate these lost lives, we reaffirm our commitment to the women of Ontario and beyond.

\r\nToday, more than ever, it is crucial to redouble our collective efforts to change this reality. We must continue to strengthen support networks, raise our voice to increase public awareness and support survivors. Every act of solidarity, every gesture of support, makes a difference in the fight to eradicate ou stop violence against women. Organizations and allies of the cause have an essential role to play in ending these tragedies. Together, we must demand stronger measures to protect women and ensure they can live in a safe and equal environment.
On December 6 : Let us remember them
