Already 34 years have passed since one of the deadliest shootings against a group of women in Canada. On December 6, 1989, a man entered the École polytechnique de Montréal, killing 14 women. They lost their lives because of their gender. Torn from their future, one can only imagine the life and success they would have had.

In Canada, December 6 is recognized as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. In 2013, the United Counties of Prescott & Russell also declared December 6 as Non-Violence Day, an initiative that allows us all to hope for a safer place for children and women in our community.

On December 6th, the Prescott-Russell Coalition to End Violence Against Women invites you to attend a vigil ceremony that will be held from 12:15 pm to 12:45 pm at the following locations:

  • Hawkesbury commemorative monument, in front of Town Hall (600 Higginson Street)
*In case of bad weather, please proceed inside the town hall, to the Council Chamber.
  • Rockland commemorative monument, Simon Park (1450 Park Avenue)
*In case of bad weather, please proceed to the Clarence-Rockland Library (across from the monument) at 1525 Park Avenue, Rockland, Ontario K4K 1C3.
  • Casselman commemorative monument, Senior Park (802 Laval Street)
*In case of bad weather, please proceed to 758 Brebeuf Street, Casselman.
In addition to speaking out against acts of gender-based violence, these ceremonies will commemorate the 14 women who lost their lives in 1989. This day is also an opportunity to increase our awareness and our understanding of violence against women. It is a symbolic moment to say NO to violence against women.

We hope you can join us for this gathering. If you have any question, please visit our Facebook page.
